Get the hell out of Dodge!

September 18, 2011

We got a small break in the weather today….we think Kenny sending all the sun helped.

Before we left Dodge City we headed about 10 miles west of town to see the best thing Dodge has to offer………

The ruts from the wagon wheels have lasted the elements since 1872. Amazing!

Sign greeting you

When you look around the landscape it’s hard to believe that this mound of dirt could be a landmark used to direct the Santa Fe trail.

We burned through Kansas and I was never so happy to get out of a state. We were in this constant plains wind, they say that it drove some of the early settlers mad. I can see why! We saw lots of cows along the way, a dead fox and dead armadillo on the side of the road, 2 turtles and a red tailed hawk. I also saw a antelope hop a fence and run through a field of cows yesterday when we were on Rt 2, the road closed to through traffic.

We stayed dry until we hit Moline, home of the oldest swinging footbridge in the country…built 1904. You can see it on the Internet. We were in and out of the soup for the rest of the day.

Arrived in Springfield, MO 461 miles on the day.
